Interview: Stephanie Lantry and Carrie Smith of Conjoined Comics

The Alternative Press Expo is a small convention that is geared to, as you can guess, the alternative facets of what the comics industry has to offer. What’s more than that is APE is as laid back a comic convention as you will find. Small shows will do that simply because smaller size means more attention, and the increased ability to interact with others in the comics community. That’s whether it’s fans amongst professionals, professionals among their peers, or otherwise. So inevitably, thi

From the Design Desk: Alternative Press Expo (APE) 2009

A couple of weekends ago the Alternative Press Expo took place here in the SOMA neighborhood of San Francisco. This was my second year in a row attending APE . The show is mostly centered around comics and graphic novels. I saw a lot of the same authors and artists showing new work, building upon old work, or just plain repeating the same old work from last year

STORM Sunday: Princess Witch Boy Press!

Last week’s Alternative Press Expo was amazing!  Debuting my first mini-comic was a great experience.  I loved seeing a lot of people I talked to last year as well as meeting a horde of new folks this year!  Press has been very kind to me and my funny book endeavor and I am feeling so much gratitude that it is simply quite humbling, dear reader! Princess Witch Boy made it into the take home pile of JK Parkin from Robot 6 of Comic Book Resources, Comicvine reporter Sara Lima interviewed me

APE ‘09 | The Haul

Some of my APE purchases I probably spent more at the Alternative Press Expo this year than I have in previous years. It's probably my favorite show of the ones I've been hitting regularly since moving to California a few years back, if only because at just about every single table in the place you have the opportunity to discover a comic you've never seen before. Although living in the Bay Area I have access to shops that not only carry independent stuff, but in some cases also have minicomi

APE: Alternative Press Expo Report

Alternative Press Expo OK, I have to be honest, the part of Comicon that thrills me the most while at the same time makes me the most uncomfortable is Artist’s Row. It thrills me because the people who actually make big name and independent books alike are there to show off their stuff.  It makes me uncomfortable, because a large portion of the artwork is just mediocre and I know that most will never make it beyond the small pity sales they get at the con. The Alternative Press Expo (APE

Interview: James Sime on Isotope, APE and Comics

I’ve known James Sime for several years now. What I’ve learned about the proprietor of San Francisco’s Isotope Comics Lounge and his staff is that they always strive to make Isotope quite different from your average comic book store. Currently, James and his staff are preparing for some big upcoming events. On October 17th and 18th at the Concourse is the annual Alternative Press Expo (APE) , and for the seventh year, James and his staff will be handing out the Isotope Award for Excell
